For the best fit, choose a Twin XL duvet insert to pair with your cover—so, both the insert and cover should be the same size.
While you can use a Twin XL duvet cover on a twin-sized bed, the extra length may hang too far off the end of the bed. Similarly, a twin-sized comforter is likely too short to use on a Twin XL bed.
